How much does a ghostwriter cost? What shapes a quote
There is no single meaningful price for ghostwriting. A short founder article and an interview-led memoir are different jobs. The useful question is what work the quote actually covers.
The biggest factor is scope
Length matters, but so does the state of your material. Turning recorded interviews and rough notes into a coherent manuscript involves discovery, research, planning, drafting and revision. A fully outlined piece with approved source material is a different assignment from finding the story together.
Before asking for a quote, decide whether you need a full draft, an outline, a sample chapter, a speech, or ongoing thought-leadership pieces. Starting with a smaller, clearly defined phase can help both sides test the collaboration.
What should a ghostwriting proposal include?
Ask for written deliverables, a timeline, interview and research expectations, the number of revision rounds, how feedback will be collected, and what happens if the scope changes. For a book or other substantial work, agree on milestones and approval points before drafting begins.
- What materials and access will you provide?
- Who signs off on outlines and drafts?
- How many revisions are included, and what counts as a new direction?
- How will confidentiality, credit and usage rights be handled in the agreement?
Who owns the words?
Do not assume every contract handles rights the same way. Discuss copyright, attribution, confidentiality and use of samples before signing. If the manuscript raises sensitive legal or privacy questions, seek appropriate professional advice; a writing proposal is not a substitute for legal guidance.
How to request a useful quote
Describe the intended reader, format, approximate length, available notes or interviews, timeline, and what you want the finished work to achieve. You do not need a polished brief: an honest account of what you have is the best starting point.
